Granville Mumford, Jr.

March 4, 1932 — September 7, 2022

Milford - On September 7, 2022, Granville Oliver Mumford, Jr. peacefully went home to be with the Lord and his late wife, Charlotte.

He was born on March 4, 1932, in Laurel, DE to the late Granville and Florence Mumford.

Mr. Mumford graduated from Laurel High School in 1950. Granville was an avid gardener. He raised 5,000 gladiolus each summer and sold them to Glady’s Flower shop in Milton De.

He honorably served our country in the Delaware National Guard from 1950 to 1959. Granville served with the 945th anti-aircraft artillery battalion out of Seaford, De. His first 5 years as a corporal. Then transferred to the 736th Tank Battalion out of Fort Miles, De. and was promoted to Sergeant in charge of his own 5-man tank crew.

Granville started work at Sunshine Dry Cleaning in Seaford where he drove a dry-cleaning truck. He then went to work at L.D. Caulk where he retired as a supervisor. Mr. Mumford enjoyed wood working so he then became a Cabinet Maker for Chris Zook in Greenwood. After working 7 years for Chris, he started his own woodworking business and eventually retired from that in his 80’s.

Granville married Charlotte Kern on August 14, 1954. Both were dedicated members of First Baptist Church of Milford. They volunteered regularly with cleaning and landscaping tasks. He was a Deacon at the church for many years.

Mr. Mumford was recently preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Charlotte Mumford, and his brother James Linwood Mumford.

He is survived by his children, Granville O. Mumford III, Lynn A. Hollinger, Glen B. Mumford and his wife Dorothe, and Kevin B. Mumford and his wife Patricia, his grandchildren, Carrie Kobus, Melissa McMullen, Shane Mumford, Cody Mumford, Dakota Mumford, Clifton D. Mumford, Simon L. Mumford, Amber L. Mudri, Andrew S. Hollinger, Samuel S. Mumford and Diana M. Franck, his great grandchildren, Owen Mumford, Julie Mumford, John Mudri, Adam Mudri, Jacob Hollinger, Olivia Hollinger, Della Franck, Charlotte Franck, Sage McMullen, Bailey McMullen, Brayden McMullen, Brooke Kobus, Chris Kobus, Shane Mumford Jr, Payton Mumford, Caleb Mumford, Avery Mumford, Haylie Mumford, his great great grandchild, Asher, Son of Shane Jr, and his sister Brenda Rogers and her husband Robert of Rock Hill, S.C.

The family will receive visitors at The First Baptist Church of Milford, 6062 Old Shawnee Road, Milford, DE 19963, from 12PM to 1PM on Saturday 9/24, with a funeral service at 1PM.

Interment is Carey Cemetery in Millsboro.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be made to the First Baptist Church of Milford.

Granville’s family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to the team at Genesis Nursing home, Milford, De. and especially to his nurses Billie, Laura, and Cynthia and to his roommate, Ira.
