Gladys “Penny” Austin passed away peacefully on December 17, 2020 at the home of her daughter Debbie and son-in-law Tim. She was 90 years old.
She was born July 12, 1930 to John and Emma (Joseph) Mitchell. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Harold, her son Gary, three brothers and four sisters.
She is survived by her daughter Debbie, son-in-law Tim Coverdale, of Ellendale, Del.; three grandchildren, Amy Fountain (Michael) of Milton, Del.; Tim Coverdale Jr. (Jessica) of Appomattox, Va.; and Nicholas Coverdale of Milford, Del.; three great grandchildren, Mason, Myles and Dakota.
Shortly after graduating from Greenwood High School she married Harold Austin, a 20 year veteran of the Army and Air Force. She lived a military life, living in Washington DC, Scotland, Cheyenne Wyoming, South Dakota (Ellsworth Air Force Base) and Florida.
Before her retirement she was employed as a secretary with Dentsply International.
She was a member of Houston United Methodist Church where she was active with the United Methodist Women and the auxiliary of Milford Memorial Hospital.
The family would like to thank Delaware Hospice of Milford. Special thanks to her nurse and her kind and wonderful caregiver who she became friends with, looking forward to her visits, friendship and kindness.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, services will be private.
Private interment will be held at a later date.
