William Robert Hitchens (Bob) was born July 22, 1935 and died on December 8, 2024. He lived most of his life in Milford, Delaware. Bob graduated from Milford High School in 1953, where he was voted “Most Popular” in his senior year. He earned two bachelor degrees from the University of Delaware, where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Fraternity. He was a member of Avenue United Methodist Church in Milford. Bob served in the Army, including two years of Active Duty with an overseas assignment and four years of Reserve Duty resulting in an Honorable Discharge. He worked primarily in retail sales and was also a Payroll Manager for George & Lynch Construction.
Bob’s latter years were spent assisted by several capable caregivers and an exceptional supervisor, his close friend Addie Shorts. Bob enjoyed anything related to movies, especially from the 1940’s and 1950’s, Broadway Musicals, history and geography and loved to answer trivia questions on these topics.
Bob is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Glenn and Jean Hitchens of Dover, DE, Bob’s nephew David Hitchens (Shmila) of Hinsdale, IL, Bob’s niece Amanda Downes (Marshall) of Lewes, DE, a sister, Mary Ann Hitchens of West Grove, PA, cousins Patsy Cooper (Bob) of Osprey, Florida and Carol Jorden of Redding, Connecticut and many great nephews and nieces.
Bob spent the final months of his life in the Delaware Veterans Home, Milford, DE, surrounded by positive reinforcement from the wonderful, caring and highly capable staff.
Per Bob’s wishes there will be no service and burial will be private.
