Reese E. Dickerson

Of Lincoln, passed away Sunday, July 25, 2010 in Milford Center in Milford, where he had been a resident since October. He was 93.

Mr. Dickerson was born on November 13, 1916 at home on the family farm in Greenwood and was the son of the late Edgar and Ida (Watson) Dickerson.

He attended school in Slaughter Neck and later at Milford School on Lakeview Avenue.

Mr. Dickerson farmed until 1941 when he married Ruth E. Bailey from Federalsburg, Maryland. That same year they settled in Baltimore where he was employed with the Glenn L. Martin Company for several years. After the birth of their daughter, Janice, in Milford, they returned to Baltimore where he continued with the same company for seven more years before moving his family to Lincoln. For the next few years, Reese worked in carpentry for several local contractors; Sharp Short, Richard Johnson and Robert Zook. In 1963 he started his own business, Reese Dickerson Contractor and Builder which he operated successfully until he retired in 1981.

Reese was an avid fox hunter and was a member of the Greenbiar Hunting Club.

He was a devoted member of the Avenue United Methodist Church in Milford where he attended the 8 o'clock service every Sunday until his illness and was their faithful mail carrier for years.

During his residency at the Milford Center, he had been given wonderful care by the doctors, nurses and aides and witnessed his faith to them everyday.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Dickerson was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth E. Dickerson in 2001; two brothers, Charles Dickerson and Medford Dickerson; three sisters, Ann Roach, Catherine Mills and Thelma Dickerson and a granddaughter, Vonda Kay Abbott in 1984.

He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Janice and Jim Abbott of Milford; a grandson, Greg Abbott and his wife Heather of Milford; two great grandchildren, Quinn Davis Abbott and Morgan Bailey Abbott; a brother and sister-in-law, John and Marian Dickerson of Milford; several nieces and nephews and many dear friends.

Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 29, 2010 at the Avenue United Methodist Church, 20 N. Church St, Milford, where friends may call two hours prior.

Burial will be in the Milford Community Cemetery on Route 113.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial contributions to the Avenue United Methodist Church, Building Fund or Memorial Fund, 20 N. Church St, Milford, DE, 19963.
