Phoebe Houston Lucas, 81

MILFORD - Phoebe Houston Lucas passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her family on July 10, 2013.

Phoebe was born in Milford on May 27, 1932 the daughter of the late Alfred Clement Houston, Jr. and Helen Johnson Houston.

She attended Southern Seminary College from which she took many life lessons and was proud of her experience there. Phoebe met Cookie Lucas, her life love, after her return home. They were married soon after and began their life together. She had five miscarriages before giving birth to her son A.C.

Through the years Phoebe worked at Dry Goods in Wilmington, Artisans Bank in Dover, and Milford Stitching before finding her niche as a beautician. After working out of her home for a time, she opened a salon, The Hair Shack, in downtown Milford. She served the community as a beautician for over 40 years before retiring in 2006.

Phoebe was known for her edgy sense of humor and quick wit and left many friends and acquaintances laughing and blushing. She enjoyed supporting her son as she attended nearly every one of his little league and football games. Many who attended these games remember her unique yell that could be heard far and near. Phoebe also loved a bargain and she liked to frequent auctions and yard sales. She held the first yard sale ever in Milford.

She was a member of the Avenue United Methodist Church in Milford where she was an active choir member for several years.

Although she and her husband Cookie were later divorced, they remained close until his death in 1999.

She is survived by her son, A.C. Lucas, his wife Doreen and granddaughter Kelly Lucas; and a sister, Elizabeth "Libby" Jamieson.

Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 15, 2013 at Rogers Funeral Home, 301 Lakeview Ave, Milford, where friends may call after 10:00 a.m.
