Mary Louise Long O'Bier

December 14, 1950 — June 6, 2025

Ellendale

On June 6, 2025, Mary Louise Long O’Bier went home to be with the Lord. She was 74.

Louise was born in Northumberland, PA on December 14, 1950, to the late John and Mary Eleanor Long.

She graduated from Milford High School in 1968. Louise had a love of children and education, so she decided to attend the University of Delaware and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education in 1972, and then a Master’s in Education from Salisbury State.

Louise was employed in the Milford School District as a first-grade teacher at Benjamin Banneker Elementary and then at Evelyn I. Morris Early Childhood School.

Louise was inducted into the Epsilon Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, an international honorary organization for women educators, in 1995. She held many official roles in her chapter. Her greatest joy was being the Future Teacher Scholarship Chairperson, organizing applications, the selection committee, and the celebration for the chosen recipient. Louise also worked tirelessly fundraising for this annual scholarship, particularly with the help of her brother, Chet.

The sisters of her Epsilon Chapter are honoring Louise by naming the scholarship The Louise O’Bier Memorial Scholarship for Future Teachers.

She was the President of the Board at Avenue United Methodist Church Preschool for many years, and also a member of the congregation.

Louise was married to Donald O’Bier, Jr. on October 17, 1992 at Barratts Chapel.

She enjoyed reading, traveling, going to the beach, antiquing, working in her flower garden, country music, the play “Wicked”, and loved all the children she taught throughout the years.

Louise is survived by her husband of 32 years, Donald O’Bier, Jr., her brother, Chester Long and his wife Sue Fox, her nephew, Christopher Long and his wife Lisa and their children, her niece, Kelly Cushing and her husband Rob and their children, her goddaughter, Emily Chesser, and her godson, Patrick Bailey.

The family will receive visitors at Avenue United Methodist Church, from 11AM to 1PM on Monday June 16th, with a funeral service at 1PM.

Interment will be private.

Flowers may be sent or donations in her name may be given to Avenue United Methodist Church, 20 North Church Street, Milford, DE 19963, or to The Louise O’Bier Memorial Scholarship for Future Teachers by contacting Nancy Burkett, Epsilon Treasurer, at nancyburkett2018@gmail.com.
