Jon Gregory Lock

MILFORD, Jon Gregory Lock, mechanical engineer, retired from the Architect of the Capitol in 2003, passed away peacefully at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes, DE, on June 19, 2013. He was 65.

Jon, or Greg as he was known by friends and family, was born in Washington, D.C. August 29, 1947 and attended Archbishop John Carroll High School. In his youth his passion was track and throughout his high school career Jon was considered the fastest man in the Washington, DC Metropolitan Area. Courted by thirty seven colleges and universities with the promise of full scholarships in track, he turned every one down to attend the University of Maryland to pursue a degree in Mechanical Engineering. In 1969, Greg was called to military service in the United States Navy and served on the USS Arlington until it was decommissioned in 1970. He was then stationed on the USS Hector until 1971 when he was honorably discharged. He received the Navy Achievement Award for his service in Vietnam. Following his service in the Navy, Jon worked for the Architect of the Capitol until his retirement in 2003. After which he retired to Slaughter Beach, DE, where he fulfilled his life-long dream of designing and building his own home.

Jon was known as the go-to guy by friends and family. He was always willing to perform the tasks set forth before him. If he didn't know how to complete the task, he would "smoke it over" until he got it done. He was never a man who enjoyed sitting still. Constantly on the go after retirement, it was not uncommon to find him at Lowes or Ace Hardware several times a day. It seemed there was always something that either needed fixing or improvement and between his trips he would always find the time to bring flowers home to his wife. Jon believed in paying it forward and he always gave more of himself than he ever seemed to take. He was forever the humble, generous, proud and thoughtful man who worked tirelessly to protect those closest to him.

Jon was preceded in death by his father, James Leonard Lock, Sr., and mother, Virginia Davis Lock Fisher.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 44 years, Kathleen Schiappa Lock, his son, Stevan F. Lock (Jennifer) of Brooklyn, NY, daughter, Kathleen "Kelly" M. Quinn, granddaughter, Cameron Isabelle Quinn of Slaughter Beach, DE, brother, James Leonard Lock, Jr. (Shirley) of Fairfax, VA., sister Virginia Lock Baran (Robert), and thirty-three nieces and nephews and a battalion of great nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 1, 2013 at Rogers Funeral Home, 301 Lakeview Ave, Milford.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Tunnell Cancer Center, 18947 John J. Williams Highway, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971.
