"Jim"

Of Milton, died suddenly on Friday, May 11, 2012 at his home. He was 82.

Jim was born on May 14, 1929 in Hickman, Delaware, son of the late David R. and Annie (Lucas) Messick.

He was a veteran of the United States Army serving his country during the Korean Conflict.

As a young boy growing up on the family farm, Jim developed a great love of the land and all it produced which may have led him later to his employment with a survey/land engineering company, Ramesh C. Batta Associates in Georgetown where he held the position of Office Manager for 24 years, retiring in 2005.

Jim enjoyed gardening, loved his pets, special times he spent with his family and embraced every opportunity to meet new people.

He was a life member of the Elks Lodge #2401 in Milford, a member of the Milford Senior Center and attended the Cedar Neck Church in Milford.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Messick was preceded in death by his son, James Stephen Messick in 2008.

He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Susanne J. Messick; two daughters, Karen Appel of Milford and Beverly A. Young of Georgetown; a step-son, Miles Norwood and his wife Jenny of Milton; a step-daughter, Michele Warren and her husband Luther of Milton; a sister and brother-in-law, Shirley and Harold Rothermel of Frederica; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Terry and Nancy H. Jaywork of Camden; six grandchildren, Sherri L. Appel, Lori B. Appel, Jennifer L. Hagen, Brittany Cunningham, Brock Layton and Hayley Norwood; and seven great-grandchildren, Devon Warrington, Brie Hagen, Cohen Hagen, Madison Harmon, Luke Johnston, Malachi Cunningham and Jordan Cunningham and was looking forward to the arrival of another great-granddaughter who is due to be born in September.

Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 16, 2012 at Rogers Funeral Home, 301 Lakeview Ave, Milford, where friends may call two hours prior.

Burial will be held privately.

Jim's family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to his primary care physician, Dr. B. Helou, and his staff. They held a special relationship over the many years he was a patient and gave Jim exceptional medical care along with true compassion.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions be made to the S.P.C.A., 22918 DuPont Blvd, Georgetown, DE, 19947 or to Home of the Brave, 6632 Sharps Rd, Milford, DE, 19963.
