Gus Viehman

May 13, 1916 — June 14, 2018

Gus F. Viehman, 102, a resident of The Delaware Veterans Home, Milford Delaware, died on June 14, 2018, after a brief illness.

Mr. Viehman was born in Marydel, DE, and at the age of 102 was one of Delaware’s oldest World War II veterans.  Mr. Viehman was drafted on May 18, 1943, five days after his 27th birthday.  Giving up his businesses – three service stations and a rental car company, he was trained as a tank mechanic and sent to Europe with the 10th Armoured Division.  Gus earned the Bronze Star and at the end of the war, returned home to his wife and son.  His wife, Anne, died in 1982 and their son, Gus, Jr. died in 1992.

In 1992, Gus married Hildegard Milovanovic and when she became ill in 2008, they moved into the Delaware Veterans Home.  After her death in 2012, Gus chose to stay on at DVH.  He enjoyed the company of his fellow veterans and had made many good buddies.  “It’s almost like being back in the Army,” he said.

Mr. Viehman is survived by his brother, Fred Viehman, his grandson, Gus Viehman III, his great grandson, Zane Forrest Vesper, a granddaughter, Tara Lynn Chase, and a grandson, Scott David Woodruff.  In addition, he will be missed by his niece, Evelyn Cunningham and her husband Scott, his nephew, Peter Viehmann, nieces, Jean Kingry, Carol Rogers, Elsie Spicer, Eileen Dunning, and nephew, Bob Brand, along with their families and also, by his stepson, Rudolf Hufnagl.
