Brig. General Francis A. Humphreys, Jr., Ret., 85

Of Springfield, VA, died Thursday, June 20, 2013 at his home with his wife by his side.

Francis was born on May 2, 1928, in Asheville, NC, son of the late Francis A. Humphreys, Jr. and Marguerite Willis Humphreys.

He graduated from the University of Arkansas with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1949. He was also a 1963 graduate of the Air Command and Staff College and a 1965 graduate of the Armed Forces Staff College.

He met and married his wife, the former Evelyn Short of Milford, when he was a second lieutenant stationed at the Dover Air Force Base.

General Humphreys was assigned as chief, Air Force Section, Military Assistance Advisory Group in Iran, in June 1974. He was the Commander in charge of the Air force base in Iran.

He was a command pilot whose military decorations and awards included the Silver Star, Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Distinguished Flying Cross with five oak leaf cluster, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal with 22 oak leaf clusters, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award ribbon and the Combat Readiness Medal.

After retiring from military service, Mr. Humphreys started a general contracting business, HFI, Inc. located in Springfield, and held the position of the company President.

He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Evelyn Short Humphreys of Springfield, VA.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 28, 2013, in the Milford Community Cemetery on N. Walnut St., Milford.
