Florence M. Atkinson

Of Milford, Delaware, passed away on Tuesday, October 5, 2010 at the Delaware Hospice Center in Milford. She was 87.

Florence was born on February 10, 1923 in Philadelphia, daughter of the late George W. and Florence M. (Fredericks) Myers.

She was employed for many years with the Wilmington Trust Company in Milford beginning as a teller and retiring as an assistant manager in 1992.

Mrs. Atkinson was a member and past officer of the Ladies of the Elks/ Milford Elks Lodge #2401, a member of the AARP Chapter 3134 in Milford where she held the office of Treasurer for 18 years, a member of the Milford Senior Center where she volunteered her time and talents organizing details for the annual play and assisting the band and chorus and a member of the Pocahontas Chapter of the Redmen.

Florence also enjoyed working as a volunteer in the gift shop of Bayhealth Milford Memorial Hospital.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William H. Atkinson in 1990.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia L. and Samuel Smargissi, Sr. of Milford; two sisters, Dorothy Swift and Helen Kane, both of Milford; four sisters-in-law, Edith Seltzer, Dorothy Myers, Sarah Atkinson and Lillian Hannon; a brother-in-law, Thomas Atkinson; two grandchildren; Tricia Clendaniel and her husband Ryan and Samuel Smargissi, Jr. and his wife Susie and six great grandchildren; Cassidy, Alissady, Logan and Payton Clendaniel and Mason Leigh and Joey Smargissi.

Services will be held at 12 noon on Friday, October 8, 2010 at Rogers Funeral Home, 301 Lakeview Ave, Milford, where friends may call after 10:30 a.m.

Burial will be held in the Milford Community Cemetery on Route 113.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial contributions to the Milford Senior Center, 111 Park Ave, Milford, DE, 19963.
