Doris G. Kimmel, 88, peacefully entered Heaven on Friday, September 29, at 9:04pm at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital (HUP) in Philadelphia, PA., with family by her side.
Doris was born on Thursday, April 18, 1935 in Milford, DE., daughter to Florence Markert Gibson and Byron Prebble Gibson. Doris had an older brother Robert B. and a younger brother Donald L. and they grew up in a wonderful neighborhood on S. Walnut St. in Milford. She attended Milford High School and graduated in 1953. Doris was on the MHS basketball varsity team and was known as “Gunner Gibson”. In her youth she was in Girl Scouts of America, played the piano, played the clarinet in the MHS band, worked as an assistant for Dr. Adkins (local dentist) and helped her mother to be a plane spotter during WWII. Doris attended Centenary College in Hackettstown, NJ. Where she earned an associate’s degree in business. Doris was proud of her family’s military service and sacrifice and thus she was proud to be an American. An avid baseball fan, she enjoyed cheering on the Philadelphia Phillies!
Doris literally married the boy next door, Dr. William D. “Bud” Kimmel Jr. (dentist) and they were blessed with three children, Kathryn Lee, Karen Leilani, and Daniel Dean, who all grew up in Milford. While raising their children, Doris was vey active in the Avenue U.M. Church, and the Milford Memorial Hospital Auxiliary (now Bayhealth). Doris enjoyed helping others as well as the beauty of nature, especially hummingbirds, dogwoods, and pets.
Most of all, she loved being with her family and enjoyed taking family vacations. She was able to go on several cruises and countless trips to the beach. Some of her fondest moments were the holiday meals she had in her home.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, husband Bud in 1997 and her daughter Kathryn K. Russ in 2021.
Doris is survived by her children; Karen K. McColley (Lynn), and Daniel D. Kimmel (Dawn). Her grandchildren; C.J. Russ and Katrina R. Viddy (Charles), Will L. McColley (Lauren), Sarah M. Kirby (Mike), Mary E. McColley and Catie M. Meck (Mike), William D. “Tripp” Kimmel III and Christina L. Kimmel. Doris was also blessed to know her two great-grandsons, Ben P. Kirby and Joey F. Kirby.
