Beverly Young

September 9, 1957 — April 23, 2023

On April 24th, 2023, Beverly “Bev” Ann Young of Georgetown, Delaware passed away peacefully due to a sudden illness at the age of 65 at Bayhealth Hospital in Milford, surrounded by her loved ones.

Bev was born on September 9th, 1957 in Milford, Delaware to James P. Messick and Beatrice “Jane” Glasco. She was a graduate of Milford High School. As a life-long Sussex County native, she was widely known, loved, and respected by her community. The biggest source of pride in her life was being a mother to her beloved daughter, Jenny, who she loved more than anything. While times were sometimes tough, she was known to be a hard worker and always provided her family with love and support. Bev worked alongside her father at Ramesh C Batta Associates, an engineering and survey design company, where she excelled in survey design and land deed research. She is most known in her community for being the best waitress at Pizza Palace in Georgetown for over 30 years. During her time at Pizza Palace, Bev made an impact on all of her loyal customers and her co-workers, many of whom she also considered life-long friends.

Bev was lucky enough to enjoy the past over 25 years of her life with “her man” and love of her life, John Grigoraskos. While Bev was a very independent woman and spent most of her time taking care of others, John always made it a point to take care of Bev in every way she would let him and loved her immensely, as did she to him. One of their favorite things to do together was to go to the casino or as they lovingly referred to it “going to the rock and roll”.

Bev’s greatest value in life was family and often referred to herself as the “matriarch”, which she never let you forget. To her family, she went by many nicknames, including “Bevvy”, “Beerly”, “Amigo #3”, and “Mommom with the kitties”. She loved being a mother, grandmother and an aunt. To her family, she was a best friend, mentor, and confidant. Bev was well known for supporting her grandchildren and niece in Georgetown Little League, Pop Warner, Girls on the Run and all of their activities in the Indian River and Sussex Tech School District. Bev always looked forward to the summer time, so she could go on vacations to Lancaster and Ocean City with her family, and make as many all-day beach trips as she could. She made it a point to never miss events with her family and she always went the extra mile, having decorations for every holiday or celebration on hand. She was truly the life of the party and you could always find her at an event dancing with a cold Coors Light in her hand.

Bev was a very active and energetic woman to the end of her life. She enjoyed spending all day making zucchini bread to give to her friends and family. Every gathering, loved ones would be on the lookout for Bev’s famous pretzel salad, which she always made out of love, even though she let it be known that she hated it. One of her favorite activities was going to Dollar Tree and making beautiful, one of a kind crafts to give to all of her loved ones, filling her own house with her creations. While she may have not loved it all the time, she always made it a point to take her 2 mile walk around her neighborhood every morning. In her downtime, which she had little of, she enjoyed watching her shows, especially true crime shows and Real Housewives. And as some know, she very much looked forward to reading her paper every day.

Bev is preceded in death by both of her beloved parents, her mother, Beatrice “Jane” Glasco, and her father, James “Jim” Messick, her siblings; Steve Messick, and Dorothy “Karen” Appel. She is survived by the love of her life, John Grigoraskos, step-mother; Susanne Messick, step-sister; Michele Warren, her daughter; Jennifer “Jenny” Warrington and her husband Fred Warrington; her grandchildren, Brie Hagen and her boyfriend Allen Cane, Cohen Hagen and his girlfriend Katharine “Katie” Whitelock, Madison Harmon, and Devon Warrington; her great-grandchildren, Aria Warrington and Ryder Warrington; her nieces, Sherri Appel, and her son Luke Johnston, and Lori Gooding, her husband Chad Gooding and her daughter Meela Gooding; her brother in law, Dick Appel; and her best friend, Darlene Stayton and her husband Kevin Stayton.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at Crossroads Community Church in Georgetown on Monday, May 1st, 2023. The visitation will be held from 10am-11am. Her service will be held from 11am-12pm. A reception will follow at the same location.
