Ann was born in Rockford, Illinois, the third of ten children, of Dr. Charles and Helen Leonard. She was educated in the local parochial schools until leaving for Marymount College in Washington DC. Her college experience was unusually happy. She met friends with whom she remained close for a lifetime and earned an Associates Degree in Sociology. She then transferred to Marymount University in Tarrytown, New York, where she completed work for a bachelor’s degree in sociology. Upon graduation, she married David and moved to Stuttgart Germany where he was stationed in the Army. After a year there the couple moved to Milford where they lived and raised their family.
During this time, she worked as a volunteer at Catholic Charities in Dover. That agency encouraged her to continue her studies in social work at the University of Delaware, where she earned a Master’s Degree in counseling. She then began a professional career at the agency lasting 20 years, working with young mothers, foster care, and adoption.
Ann was active in the community. She served on the board of Peoples Place in Milford, the board of Marymount University, and the board of Wesley College. She was a member of and served a term as president of the Milford Woman’s Club. She was a Master Gardner who loved her flowers and plants, served a term as president of the Milford Garden Club, and always had something blooming in her home or in her garden. This love of beauty was reflected in her warm and caring personality.
Ann is survived by her husband of 64 years, David Burton. She was a wonderful mother and is survived by their four children, Joseph and his wife Turtle, Irwin “IG” and his wife Jullie, Charles and his wife Marie, and Sarah Burton Boling. Mrs. Burton is also survived by ten grandchildren, five great grandchildren.
